Geschichte: Soaken wet once, soaken wet twice and thrice... I guess the third time is the charm, especially when it happens in a geological setting that is unlike anything I have ever seen. Despite the rain, the walk through these orange rocks was mesmerizing and completely different from any other hike nearby where lush forests stretch as far as one can see. You could say, these barren lands stole my heart!
Geologie: In the Tablelands in Gros Morne National Park, you are standing on Earth's mantle. Peridotite, which is typical mantle rock, is very common here. It consists mainly of the light green mineral olivine, which weathers to a brownish-yellowish color. This is why the Tablelands appear orange from a distance. On closer inspection, the rocks show a lot of dark green areas. This is because olivine also transforms into dark green serpentine minerals when it comes into contact with water. Other minerals, such as the pyroxene (middle of the rock), are also typical for mantle rocks.
