Geschichte: On a hot day in February, I biked through Adelaide Hills. Uphill, on the way to Mt Lofty's summit, due to temperatures of 40ºC, I decided to walk through Cleland Conservation Park where a few eucalyptus trees offered some shade. Off the road, aware of snakes, I kept walking on rocky surfaces where I saw something that looked like a petrified shell. A closer look revealed that it might be something else...
Geologie: This rock is a stromatolite. Stromatolites are formed from the oldest microorganisms known on Earth. They exist since more than 3.5 billion years! The single-celled organisms form a typical nodule structure by trapping sediment particles in shallow water. Stromatolites can be found, among others, in Australia, where the rocks are very old.
