Geschichte: Early in the morning we descended into one of Mallorca's most famous caves: the Coves del Drach. We marveled at huge stalagmites and stalactites, admired the stunning lighting and were blown away by the live concert played on the underground lake - the acoustics were amazing! The bacon-like rock formation however, was a real tease. It made us hungry, but snacks were not allowed in the cave.
Geologie: Cave bacon is formed when mineral-rich water flows along cave walls. The minerals in the water - often calcite - precipitate onto the wall, forming very thin layers. The layers build up slowly over time. The differently coloured 'ribbons' are caused by changes in water flow, air currents, or the amount of dissolved minerals in the water, resulting in a wavy, bacon-like appearance.
