Geschichte: Legend has it that the Staircase of King Aragon was carved in a single night by the king's troops during the 1420 siege, allowing them to scale the cliffs and surprise Bonifacio. In reality, the staircase was probably cut over many years along a natural rock fracture to provide access to a freshwater spring and the sea. Even so, the legend endures and so does the strenuous climb down and back up.
Geologie: This limestone formed about 25–20 million years ago, when the region was covered by a shallow sea. Shells, corals, and other marine organisms accumulated on the seafloor in horizontal layers, which were gradually compressed and cemented into solid rock. Several million years later, tectonic forces uplifted the limestone above sea level. Natural fractures then developed and were gradually widened by erosion. One of these fractures was eventually adapted into a staircase.
