Geschichte: During my travels in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast in western Ukraine, I found a beautifully preserved shell of an ancient creature. I found it in an abandoned quarry where sand was mined.
Geologie: A long time ago, more than 10 million years ago, there was a warm sea in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast called the Sarmatian Sea. Sharks and whales and many other marine organisms lived there. The shell belongs to a mollusc of the genus Pecten, which also includes the scallops. During diagenesis, the process of fossilisation, this shell did not experience much pressure or mineral transformation, which is why its original shape and colour are still well preserved.
