Geschichte: Only 170 miles to Cody, our next destination for the day. We wanted to be there in good time, have a beer at the legendary Irma Hotel, and watch the rodeo in the evening. So, despite the impressive scenery, there wasn't much time left for the Bighorn Mountains. But once we had to stop: The sign by the roadside pointed to 3 billion years old granites. A small sample came back to the Old World.
Geologie: In the southern part of the Bighorn Mountains, ancient rocks of the North American continental core are exposed. These areas of the continental crust, known as 'cratons', have been tectonically stable for a long time. The granites and gneisses of the Wyoming Craton are 2.6 to 3.6 billion years old and thus date back to the Archean eon.
